Embattled Reggae superstar, Mark “Buju Banton” Myrie is being transferred from the Pinellas County Jail in Tampa Bay, Florida to a correctional facility in Mississippi so he can commence serving his ten year prison sentence.

The internationally acclaimed singer will serve his time at the Adams County Correctional Center in Natchez, Mississippi after it was discovered that there were a shortage of beds at the Florida facility. Judge James Moody originally insisted during Buju’s sentencing that he should serve his sentence in a Florida prison but due to this technically, the Bureau of Prisons have decided to move the Grammy winning singjay.

“The judge recommended that he serve his time in Florida, but there were no beds in Miami, and the ultimate decision was made by the Bureau of Prisons. We are hopeful that when a bed opens up down here (Florida) that we can get him transferred so that it is easier on his family (and us) to see him,” David Markus, Buju’s lawyer explained. The Adams County Prison holds well in excess of 2,000 male prisoners is owned by the corrections management provider, CCA which is the fifth largest corrections service in the U.S.

Buju was originally sentenced to ten years in prison for drug related charges stemming from a December 2009 incident in which he allegedly conspired to organize a drug deal in a police controlled warehouse. Buju will not be allowed to record any new material in prison but has since implied that he would pursue a Master’s Degree in Economics & Political Science. An appeals case spearheaded by Buju’s lawyers is still on the cards; to be heard in Georgia. Markus intimated immediately following Buju’s sentence that the artiste will likely serve at most 6 years given credit for time already served & good behavior.
